Sustainable Design (task 8)

Sustainable design is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of socialeconomic, and ecological sustainability.

Sustainable Design Architecture :"Green architecture, or green design, is an approach to building that minimizes harmful effects on human health and the environment. The "green" architect or designer attempts to safeguard air, water, and earth by choosing eco-friendly building materials and construction practices."

Green architecture may have many of these characteristics:
  • Ventilation systems designed for efficient heating and cooling
  • Energy-efficient lighting and appliances
  • Water-saving plumbing fixtures
  • Landscapes planned to maximize passive solar energy
  • Minimal harm to the natural habitat
  • Alternate power sources such as solar power or wind power
  • Non-synthetic, non-toxic materials
  • Locally-obtained woods and stone
  • Responsibly-harvested woods
  • Adaptive reuse of older buildings
  • Use of recycled architectural salvage
  • Efficient use of space

Sustainable Fashion Design:
Sustainable fashion, also called eco fashion, is a part of the growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of environmentalism and social responsibility.

H&M on Sustainable Fashion

Oscar de la Renta

“Sustainable fashion implies a commitment to the traditional techniques, and not just the art, of making clothes. I work today in the same way that I first learnt in the ateliers of Balenciaga and Lanvin 50 years ago. We need to ensure that the next generation of seamstresses and tailors have the skills necessary to develop clothes that are not only beautiful but extremely well made.”

Gucci creative director
“Quality items that stand the test of time – it is this concept of sustainability, symbolised by a timeless handbag that you wear again and again, and can pass on, that I am always thinking of when I design.”

My opinions on sustainable design are:
As a Graphic/ Communication designer is

  • use solar powers instead of electricity
  • Help my clients with choosing sustainable choices for his/her design
  • Recycle

What can you do? Is this your finest hour?
i can let my people back home know about sustainability , i can teach them and spread the word.

Do you consider sustainability when designing? and how?
To be honest i never considered sustainability when i am designing until now.  I never knew that our world is in danger due to the lack of education in my country. Now that i know what sustainability means i will always consider it to be part of my design.

What do you understand by the term Design Thinking and how does it apply to you as a designer?

What i understood about design thinking is you need to fail and sometimes fail again. But you have to fail and get up quickly and believe me you will have the solution of the problem. I think it is ok to be lost not knowing what the problem is, with research and failure and that one push you will get there; that is the magic of a designer.

Thou shalt not advertise… (Task 7)

What do you consider to be the role of advertising?
"The role of advertising is mainly to inform potential customers of the products in the market and convince them to make a purchase."
The rule of adverting is to make the brand noticeable and respected. For example when you see a lot of Ads for a specific brand, lets say coca cola  in the streets, newspaper, billboards and so on this brand gets stuck in your head something you crave it, or at time y it's like brainwashing your brain some how.

  1. Mission: the objectives behind advertising. For example: sales promotion, information and guidance to consumers, developing brand loyalty, market goodwill, facing market competition effectively, making the products popular or successful and introduction of a new product.
  2. Money: Advertising should be always within the limits of funds provided.
  3. Message: The message is given through written words, pictures, slogans and etc. It should garb the attention of the buyer.
  4. Media: not evert product should be advertised in the media.
  5. Measure: to evaluate advertisement in order to judge its effectiveness.

Discuss your thoughts on the ethics of advertising.

  • I believe the ethics in advertising in my point of view is all about truth and respect. Not using false information to promote a product thats ethics.

What do you consider to be good advertising and bad?

GOOD:

Outdoor Advertising:

When coming up with an ad campaign for FedEx Kinko's, the innovative minds at advertising agency BBDO were inspired by the streets of New York. The agency installed oversized bottles of correction fluid, highlighters, and, in one case, an office lamp, on the city's busy thoroughfares for a couple of days earlier this year.

BBDO is "Most Awarded Agency Network in the World"

Creative Canon outdoor advertisement.

Guinness basketball commercial.

Bad:
Outdoor Advertising:
This design illustrates the risk advertisers take when they overcrowd designs with too many words. With only three to five seconds to grab a driver’s attention, it is vital for outdoor lettering to be scaled to be read from a distance. Drivers who cannot read a billboard are unlikely to look again.

What are your thoughts on ambient media, guerrilla marketing and viral advertising campaigns?
Ambient advertising is about placing ads on unusual items or in unusual places you wouldn’t normally see an ad.

Example of ambient Advertising:

Example of guerrilla marketing:
Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low-cost unconventional marketing tactics that yield maximum results.

Fitness World

 Nikon Guerilla Marketing Campaign

Fitness First Guerilla Marketing Campaign

Example of viral advertising campaigns:
a direct marketing technique in which a company persuades internet users to forward its publicitymaterial in e-mails (usually by including jokes, games, video clips, etc)

"This marketing campaign is centered around a food blender. The campaign created a video that shows that the blender blends everything. Some of their most popular videos show blending expensive electronics like an iPhone.
Why it went viral: It capitalized on user’s interest to watch quick and funny things on YouTube. It was shocking in 2006 and it still is today. It attracted 160 million views back when the campaign was first launched."

"Although it seems like the Chatroulette fad was eons ago, it's really only been three years since the video chat site exploded in popularity. During this time, the improvising piano player known as Merton created the highest rated video on YouTube by singing to whoever popped up in his chat window.
Many viewers commented that he looked a lot like the singer/songwriter Ben Folds. In an ode to the original, Folds performed an improvised Chatroulette performance in front of a live audience at one of his shows, becoming a viral success in and of itself.
The example demonstrated that celebrities and brands could piggyback on Internet trends to achieve their own success"

Design Project B research/ideas.(one)

ONE
My cousin has 3 children and she doesn't have 1 album of her kids she has over (10,000) image.
i quote "i just don't have time to go and develop them, this makes me sad and i guess i lost half of the images of Haya (first child) "

TWO
me - " mom  do you have an album of Hamad (my small brother he is now 13 years old) and shaikha ( my smallest sister she's now 10 years old)"
mom - " I just have those pictures hanging in the living room"
me - " seriously, thats it? they were 2 years old what about their first walk when they were three four five years old?"
mom - "I can't remember i know i took a lot of photos but i can't remember. Nimsha stop asking me those questions."

THOSE ARE JUST SOME EXAMPLES.

My idea for my Project B is to design different kind of photography books or Albums. Why?
Because with the technology and smartphones people are losing their images, more like losing their memories. They are buying a new phone each year, or their phone get stolen or broken. In any case in this present world we live in people don't treasure memories anymore. For example All my friends and family members have smart phone with cameras on them no one of the back up their images to their computer. 95% of those people i know lose their images.

So i came up with this idea i can save them from losing their images and create photo Albums or books in different kind of sizes ,and different layouts. I can also write down captions of when those images were taken and who are the people in the image .

I also can create personal diaries and journals.

While i was searching online on this topic I found out that i have a competitor with the same kind of idea so I asked myself how can i be different?

  1. I will upload the pics myself. Because in my country people really care about the privacy of their photos.
  2. I can burn their videos on a cd and attach it to the book.
  3. I will use my design skills to print the book.

So for this project i thought i can create three kind of books
  • From A social media (Instagram)
  • old photos that i had for ages and that i have not seen for years
  • a personal journal
Blow are some photos of my Instagram account:

Product packaging (task 6)

What is Package design?
  • Packaging is the technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use.

Package design is the most important thing for any product. Without Packaging their will be no trade

What is the role of packaging?
  • The role of packaging is simply to protect the product throughout the manufacturing, transport, and storage. Good Packing means good health and safety of the consumers.

Who do you consider to be a good packaging designer?

  • Apple Packaging .. to know why watch the video below.

What is a carbon footprint?
  • The exact definition is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc.

Example
Apple is focusing on its product packaging to help reduce its total carbon footprint.
In order to determine how to best reduce carbon emissions, Apple looked carefully at the areas that contribute to its total carbon footprint, including manufacturing (which accounts for 45% of Apple's total greenhouse gas emissions), transportation (5%), product use (46%), recycling (1%) and facilities (3%). Apple's packaging directly affected its transportation emissions, with heavier, bulkier packaging requiring more shipping containers and more fuel.
Apple redesigned its packaging to be smaller and lighter, while still providing maximum protection for its products. The reduced packaging helped minimize material waste, while helping to reduce transportation emissions. Between 2006 and 2010, Apple reduced packaging for the MacBook by 53%, which allowed room for 80% more MacBook boxes in each shipping load. With fewer shipments, Apple significantly reduced its C02 emissions.

  • I use 39.96 CO2e per month find out your carbon footprints here

What is green packaging?
  •  Green packing is the improvement of sustainable packaging
  • Reduction of packaging
  • recycled materials
  • reducing environmental impact
  • reducing ecological footprints
watch the video here about green packaging.

What is traffic light labeling?
  • Traffic labeling is the colors  Red, yellow (amber) and green symbols on food products to represent high, medium and low levels of fats, sugars and salts
Example:

Global collection:

Five Olive Oil
Brand identity and packaging design for a new premium quality series of Greek extra virgin olive oil. 5 stands for quintessence in olive oil. 5 olive oil is distributed by World Excellent Products®, a company driven by passion for excellence in gastronomy. It is a newly established company, created by the ambition to build on the same core pillars of their own philosophy: innovation, respect to history and tradition and exclusive know-how on production and supply of unique products.

Origami T Bags

Designed by Nathalia Ponomareva, this packaging design adds a touch of beauty to making tea as well as combining two Japanese traditions: tea and origami. Although currently only a concept, this a strong concept and has great potential.

Headphone Packaging

These headphones created by Corrine Pant show how a small modification to packaging design can make a big difference. By using the form of a quaver to alter the packaging the consumer instantly becomes engaged. The choice of black and white aids this making the packaging very bold and striking.

 TeaPee
Canadian design student, Sophie Pépin, drew inspiration from the roots of the Native American nomadic lifestyle for this tea packaging design she calls North American Teapee. The Native American patterns that are placed around the packaging are cleverly torn away to reveal the teabags themselves.

 Lacoste Eco/Techno Polo
The concept was to explore two very different materials and the technology used in the production process of these special edition eco shirts from Lacoste. The most eco-friendly way to package the eco polo was not to print on the packaging at all but use embossing instead. The techno polo is vacuum-packaged in screen-printed foil.

Colourless Coke
COLOURLESS–an eco friendly package proposal for Coca-cola. A convex logo substitutes colourfully sprayed can. Naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture coloured cans would be saved.
