What is Corporate Social Responsibility?
"Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large"- Lord Holme and Richard Watts
another definition
"How a businesses deals with their environmental, social and economic impacts.
they help businesses operate in ways that benefit society and help improve public perception."
In my point of view CSR is how to put the environment, the society and the improvement of public awareness first.
Types of corporate social responsibility:
Environment:
Caring for the environment.
Philanthropy:
generous donation of money to good cause.( Charity or local community programs)
Ethical Labor Practices:
treating employees with respect.
Example of Companies that have a good CSR:
Starbucks
With 20,891 stores in 62 countries Starbucks Corporation is an American global coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle,Washington.
Starbucks CSR:
"Giving back to communities and the environment. Treating people with respect and dignity. Serving the world’s best coffee. Every day, we demonstrate our beliefs in the guiding principles of our mission statement in the way we do business.
In fact, corporate social responsibility at Starbucks runs deeply throughout our company. Here are some of the commitments we’ve made to do business in a socially responsible manner."
-Commitment to Origins™
Starbucks is helping to promote a sustainable model for the
worldwide production and trade of high-quality coffee.
“Green Teams” and recycling programs, Starbucks has established high
standards for environmental responsibility.
-Commitment to Communities
We strive to be a responsible neighbor and active contributor in the
communities where our partners and customers live, work and play.
-Commitment to Partners
At Starbucks, we believe in treating people with respect and dignity.
Starbucks has a good CSR because they care about the environment and they believe in humanity. When you treat people with respect people will like you more. They recycle and they support the communities in their neighborhood.
Toms
Corporate Responsibility at TOMS provides focus on the environmental and social impacts of our products and operations, responsible giving and employee life. We know that our customers will look to us for our accomplishments, which currently include:
Environmental :
We offer shoes with sustainable and vegan materials and are working to expand these offerings. These shoes include natural hemp, organic cotton, and/or recycled polyester and these materials are used on the upper, liner and/or the insole cover (instead of our standard suede insole). All of our shoe boxes are made from 80% recycled post-consumer waste and are printed with soy ink.
Humanity:
As we’ve disclosed previously in our Giving Report, our shoes are made in China, Ethiopia and Argentina. We are aware of the challenges associated with overseeing a global supply chain and our global staff actively manages and oversees our suppliers and vendors to ensure that our corporate responsibility standards are upheld. On an annual basis, we require our direct suppliers to certify that the materials incorporated into our products are procured in accordance with all applicable laws in the countries they do business in, including laws regarding slavery and human trafficking. We also clearly define appropriate business practices for our employees and hold them accountable for complying with our policies, including the prevention of slavery and human trafficking within our supply chain
Well being:
At TOMS we invest in our employees in many ways. We provide training for our employees on a number of business and leadership topics, including training for our supply chain employees by a respected third party expert on the important topic of human trafficking and slavery prevention. We provide a variety of benefits to them, including Medical, Vision, Dental, Long Term Disability, Life Insurance and AD&D, Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Employee Assistance Program, Paid Family Leave, and 401(k). We also offer Paid Time Off and a variety of fitness and wellness classes at our headquarters building outside of Los Angeles, Calif.
What i love about toms is the way they care about others. Helping others is their aim! when you buy a one pair of shoes you are also buying a shoe for a person in need. ONE FOR ONE! I chose Toms as an example of the CSR because they care about the environment they used recycled materials. They believe in ethical labor practices and they invest in they employees from training to medical to fitness wellness.
